I utilize birds at the top of the food chain to monitor the concentrations and effects of bioaccumulative compounds of concern. For over 20 years I have been working with bald eagles. I have recently been working with collaborators in Sweden, Russia, Uganda, and South Africa on projects with white-tailed sea eagles, Steller’s sea eagles, and African fish-eagles. I have also been collaborating with scientists in South Carolina and Georgia to determine what causes AVM and how to manage to protect eagles and waterfowl from this disease. Our working group includes personnel from the South Carolina DNR, NOAA, University of South Carolina, University of Georgia, Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Georgia DNR.

The Joint Analytical Services Laboratory is directed by Dr. William Bowerman and managed by Dr. Rockie Yarwood. The JASL mission is to support the research efforts of ENST faculty and their collaborators. At the present time, the facility and its instrumentation is being utilized in support of the research efforts of ENST faculty: Dr. Stephanie Lansing, Dr. Lance Yonkos, and Dr. William Bowerman. As our department continues to grow, the vision for JASL is one of continuing expansion and improvement of capabilities with eventual development into a strong core laboratory facility serving not only ENST, but other departments in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) as well.
