Dr. Amro Hassanein is a postdoctoral associate in the Environmental Sciences and Technology (ENST) Department at the University of Maryland (UMD). He earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Bio-environmental and Energy Engineering from Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University in China. His Ph.D. research was on the effect of using microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) on anaerobic digester (AD) performance in terms of sustainable energy production and enhanced waste treatment.
Dr. Hassanein’s current work as a postdoctoral associate is to evaluate and analyze the operation and performance of an anaerobic digester processing poultry litter combined with a nutrient capture system that can partition nutrients from system by-products to increase the options and flexibility for managing nutrients, thereby reducing potential nutrient run-off into local waterways. Additionally, he works on evaluating the effect that nanoparticles (NPs) additions have on increasing the viability of poultry litter AD, which include determining the most effective concentration of NP additives to increase methane production, tracking NP degradation during digestion, and uptake of NPs by crops in lab-scale hydroponic system when the digested bio-slurry is used to fertilize the crops. This work will improve our understanding of using NPs in biogas digester. Additionally, Dr. Hassanein has a keen interest in teaching and mentoring that he is actively pursuing in the Department.

Nanotechnology in Energy and Environment: Applications and Implications
This is an overview class of nanotechnology applications and implications. Emphasis will be placed on different aspects of nanotechnology and bridging multidisciplinary knowledge in terms of the positives and negatives of nanotechnology. Specific areas to be covered in this course include nanocatalysis and application of nanotechnology in renewable energy, solar photovoltaic, photoelectrochemical conversion, energy storage, pollutants sensing, and photocatalytic abatement of air and water. Moreover, the course will analyze nanotechnology through an interdisciplinary outlook by using life-cycle analysis and understanding how nanoparticle characteristics impact transport in the environment. The course will also cover human exposure assessment and a discussion of current measurement tools.
