ENST Assistant Professor Masoud Negahban-Azar will present at World Water Week conference, a unique forum that focuses on water-related challenges and their impact on the world’s environment, health, climate, economic and poverty reduction.
Each year the Week addresses a particular theme to enable a deeper examination of a specific water-related topic. In 2016, the theme will be “Water for Sustainable Growth”.
The conference will feature Negahban-Azar for a talk titled “Food Corridors: Exploring the Food, Water, Energy and Climate Nexus in South and Southeast Asia”.
In his presentation, Dr. Negahban-Azar will discuss an alternative approach to accelerate the sustainable growth. Dr. Negahban-Azar and his colleague, Dr. Peter Rogers from Harvard University, explore the feasibility of modeling food logistics within the framework of international and intra-national corridors, while taking into account the regional comparative advantage of spatial and temporal variation of water resources. “The developed model could be expanded to include more crops, more producing and consuming locations, more time periods, multiple origins, destinations, and transshipment locations” they write. “We identify that strong employment generation arising from the crop diversification into higher value crops would leave ample scope for sustainable growth”. “Climate uncertainty could also be included”.
World Water Week is the annual focal point for the globe’s water issues. It is a week-long global water conference held each year by Stockholm International Water Institute. Experts, practitioners, decision-makers, business innovators and young professionals from more than 130 countries come to Stockholm to network, exchange ideas, foster new thinking and develop solutions to the most pressing water-related challenges of today. The world’s most prestigious water award, Stockholm Water Prize, also known as "the Nobel Prize for water" is presented during the conference.
